In some parts of the world, a simple blown fuse can bring a surgical procedure to a standstill.

Engineering World Health (EWH) was created to answer the needs of disadvantaged areas through providing and maintaining appropriate medical technology. The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program is an intensive one-year program that develops future industry leaders by combining a core management curriculum with a master's level technical education. Together, the Duke-EWH Summer Program and the MEM program offer students the opportunity to really make a difference.

Duke-EWH CUREs MEM Fellows must adhere to the following requirements; failure to do so may result in termination of the fellowship.

  1. Applications must be submitted for both the Duke-EWH Summer Institute and the MEM program separately.
  2. Applicants must be accepted into both the Duke-EWH Summer Institute and the Duke MEM program.
  3. Participate in the entire Duke-EWH Summer program during the summer before MEM studies commence
  4. Work between 10 and 20 hours each week for Duke-EWH CUREs, the Duke-EWH Summer Institute or EWH during the MEM year of studies
  5. Compete in the Duke-EWH CUREs competition
  6. Attend and assist in the weekly EWH and/or CUREs club meetings
  7. Must remain a student in the MEM program in good standing throughout the year until graduation in May

Duke-EWH CUREs MEM Fellows receive the following benefits:

  • Stipend of $750 during the fall and $750 during the spring semesters of the MEM year of studies
  • Full fellowship for the first summer in the Duke-EWH Summer Institute
  • Airfare and all living expenses related to the initial trip to the developing world.
  • Automatic entry in the CUREs competition
  • An assigned entrepreneur-mentor
  • Possible global health certificate (may require additional classes)
