As a volunteer engineer you will get a chance to make a difference. The volunteer engineer is a one year commitment, based in Durham, NC allowing the volunteer to:
- Work with donated medical equipment
- Design new medical equipment for the developing world
- Fulfill requests for spare parts from developing world hospitals
- Work with students preparing for the Summer Institute
- Travel to developing world hospitals
Duke-EWH Volunteer Engineers must adhere to the following requirements; failure to do so may result in termination of the position.
- An application must be submitted for the Duke-EWH Summer Institute indicating interest in the volunteer engineer position.
- You must be accepted into the Duke-EWH Summer Institute.
- You must participate in the entire Duke-EWH Summer program the first summer
- You must work between 10 and 20 hours each week for Duke-EWH during the year
- Attend and assist in the weekly EWH Chapter meetings
- In addition to the summer program, you may be asked to take one international trip - during the volunteer year - to the developing world to visit hospitals or deliver aid, as directed by EWH. This trip is not guaranteed.
- Participate in the training and working months of the Duke-EWH Summer program during the summer after the volunteer year working as a TA for the laboratory portion, helping students in hospitals and scouting out new hospitals.
- The program is only open to those holding American and Canadian passports.
Duke-EWH Volunteer Engineers receive the following benefits:
- There is no stipend, housing or salary associated with this position.
- Full fellowship for the first summer in the Duke-EWH Summer Institute (if taken at the time of acceptance into the volunteer engineer position).
- Full fellowship for the second summer in the Duke-EWH Summer Institute (when working as TA and assistant to students and scout)
- Airfare and all living expenses related to the additional trip to the developing world should such a trip become available
- If you are a Duke University Volunteer, you will also receive parking, a medical evaluation and a Duke University Identification card. You will be required to attend training appropriate to working in a hospital environment and your volunteer coordinator will be Robert Malkin (robert.malkin@ewh.org)
