Engineering World Health Summer Institute 2010

April 1, 2010

This summer, 52 students will participate in the EWH-Duke Summer Institute in Tanzania and Central America. These students will be provided with a unique and meaningful cultural immersion and hands-on learning experience. They will live with a local family, learn a new language, and use newly acquired technical skills to improve the quality of health care within the community. Participants, during their second month in-country, will serve a local hospital by installing and repairing equipment, training hospital staff, taking inventory, problem solving and performing other related engineering duties.

Of the 52 Summer Institute participants, 22 received funding from DukeEngage, and 12 students received scholarships from EWH and its funders. Four students received Coulter Scholarships, four students received Roddis Scholarships and an additional four students received EWH Scholarships. In all cases, scholarships were awarded based upon the students' demonstrated need and merit. In all, nearly $30,000 in scholarship funding was provided to Summer Institute participants.

Those interested in participating in the EWH Summer Institute can find more information about this exceptional and life-changing experience. EWH will also post student blogs and photos throughout the summer. Applications for the 2011 Summer Institute will be accepted beginning in the fall of 2010.
