Answers:
1. What is the difference between Individual Affiliation and Chapter Affiliation?
Individual Affiliation with Engineering World Health entitles a person to certain benefits with EWH. Annual fees for students are $35, and annual fees for faculty and professionals are $125. Chapter Affiliation with EWH entitles a group of people — collectively referred to as an EWH chapter — to certain benefits with EWH. These group benefits apply to the chapter as a whole. There are two levels of chapter affiliation: Student-Funded EWH chapters and University-Funded EWH chapters.
2. What is the difference between a Student-Funded EWH chapter and a University-Funded EWH chapter?
A Student-Funded EWH chapter consists of a minimum of 3 current EWH Student Affiliates. By forming a chapter, this group of students is entitled to a set of group benefits from EWH. A University-Funded EWH chapter pays an annual fee of $600. For this annual fee, the university-funded chapter receives an attractive package of benefits in addition to those enjoyed by student-funded EWH chapters. We encourage chapters to secure the annual fee from their academic departments or colleges, from their office of student programs (or similar), or from another outside source.
3. What benefits come with being a Student-Funded EWH chapter?
These EWH chapters receive a set of benefits, including: a discount on EWH kits, introduction to local medical equipment donation charities, access to EWH media, and recognition on the EWH website. For more information, please see the Benefits of EWH Affiliation.
4. What benefits come with being a University-Funded EWH chapter?
University-funded chapters receive all of the benefits that standard chapters receive as outlined above. The annual $600 fee qualifies the university-affiliated chapter to additional benefits, including: 10 free Student Affiliations, 1 free Faculty Affiliation, 3 free registrations at the EWH Conference, and discounts on the EWH Design Competition fee and chapter booth fee at the EWH Conference. These benefits taken together have a value of $1150, nearly twice the price of university affiliation! For more information, please refer to University-Funded EWH Chapters.
5. What benefits come with being an EWH Student Affiliate?
EWH Student Affiliate benefits include: eligibility for EWH Summer Institutes — including eligibility for financial aid — and eligibility for other EWH trips abroad and discounts in registration fees at EWH Conferences. You also get a free EWH T-shirt when you first become an EWH Affiliate.
6. Do I have to belong to an EWH chapter to be an EWH Student Affiliate?
No, you can be an EWH Student Affiliate without belonging to an EWH chapter. This may be appealing if you are interested in the individual benefits outlined above, but there is not a chapter at your university yet.
7. Do I have to be an EWH Student Affiliate to be a member of a chapter?
No, each chapter must have a minimum of three EWH Student Affiliates, but not all members of the chapter must be Affiliates of EWH. Chapter members who are not EWH Affiliates enjoy the group benefits outlined above, but not the individual benefits of EWH Student Affiliation. We encourage all chapter members to become EWH Affiliates to enjoy the benefits of individual affiliation and to support the mission of EWH. Keep in mind that 10 free Student Affiliations are included for University Affiliated chapters.
8. Why are there annual fees for EWH Affiliation?
Engineering World Health puts a significant amount of staff time into planning, managing, and operating our chapters and other programs. The annual fees we collect for EWH Affiliation defray some of our operating expenses associated with these programs and allow us to continue to offer quality opportunities and programs for our Affiliates and to deliver a positive impact for people in developing countries. EWH is a 501c3 non-profit that relies on grants and donations to operate.
9. When is the deadline for EWH Affiliation?
The deadlines are the same for Individual EWH Affiliation and University EWH Affiliation. The deadline for EWH Affiliation is September 30 of each year. For those renewing their Affiliation, there is a two month grace period. If the Affiliation is renewed by November 30, the Affiliation status will not be terminated. Beginning December 1, any Affiliation that was due for renewal and was not renewed will be suspended, and the benefits of Affiliation will cease until a new Affiliation is formed.
10. What if I want to become an EWH Affiliate in the middle of the year? Do I have to wait until the September 30 deadline?
No, you may become an EWH Affiliate at any time. If an EWH Affiliation is started after April 1 but before November 30 (the end of the grace period), the Affiliation will be honored until the following September 30 (so the Affiliation is effectively good for between a year and one and a half years). If an affiliation is started after November 30 and before April 1, the Affiliation must be renewed again the next fall (so the Affiliation is effectively good for between one year and a half a year)
